“I’ve always been a believer and taught my children that if you are a member of the community, it is your duty to give back to the community in which you work and serve. I preach it to new businesses and our employees.”
– Michael Cummings, Founder / CEO
MIKEN Builders’ employees take the lead from Mike and spend time, energy, and resources to give back to the community around them. With community service as part of the MIKEN Business Plan, the team is always looking for ways to give back. Whether it is spending the day at a fair helping kids with crafts, collecting toys for families in need, or donating supplies to organizations, the MIKEN Team takes great pride in enhancing the community.
Surfin’ snowman aids nonprofits
Organizers of the fourth Surfin’ Snowman 5-miler held in December in Bethany Beach recently presented $5,000 in contributions to three local nonprofits. From proceeds from the race that attracted nearly 1,000 runner and walkers, Race Directors Rick Hundley and Ernie Felici, of Focus Multisports, presented $2,500 to Justin’s Beach House, $1,500 to Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company and $1,000 to Contractors for a Cause. “We were proud of this event in particular because of the family-friendly aspect. To round out the 5-miler, we were thrilled to offer a 2-miler, a perfect activity for both residents and visitors alike who were at the beach over the New Year’s holiday. We thought: Let’s do a run as the sun sets, and outfit each participant with glowing swag would be a great idea. By the attendance and the positive feedback, I think we accomplished that.” said Hundley. “At Focus Multisports, Rick and I, along with our team of volunteers and enthusiastic participants, and through the generosity of our sponsors, make our community better through philanthropy and have fun while doing it,” said Race Director Ernie Felici. MIKEN Builders was the presenting sponsor of Surfin’ Snowman. Save the date for Surfin’ Snowman 2017: Dec. 30. Other dates for coming races include: Coastal Delaware Running Festival the weekend of April 21-23, Justin’s Beach House on May 27, Athletes Against Alzheimer’s on Aug. 7, and Bethany Beach Triathalon/Duathlon/Aquabike on Sept. 24.

Led by MIKEN Builder’s, Contractors for a Cause gave back to the community by providing a much needed ramp for elderly couple in Harbeson. Thanks to the enthusiastic help of workers from MIKEN Builders and Enoch Construction and materials supplied by Buildering Supply Depot, Shone Lumber and Sussex Lumber. The homeowners now have easier access in and out of their home. Project looks great and was completed in time for Thanksgiving.
Pinetown Community Center
Led by MIKEN Builder’s President, Mike McKone, Contractor’s for a Cause gave back to the community by providing a much needed renovation to the floor of the Pinetown Community Center in Sussex County. The community center provides a vital after school program for the tiny area of Pinetown. The floor of the center had become dilapidated and dangerous. With materials supplied by Shone Lumber and OC Floor Gallery and the enthusiastic help of workers from MIKEN Builders, NV Homes and OC Floor Gallery they replaced and stabilized the floor structure and installed a new vinyl floor in only two days. It looks great and most importantly the kids have a safe place to go after school.
Contractors for a Cause
The owner of MIKEN Builders, Michael Cummings, was a founding member of Contractors for a Cause in 1998. His passion and commitment to this organization has been contagious among the MIKEN team. CFAC is a foundation offering disadvantaged community members free services and professional advice in the field of home construction, maintenance, and repair. This influential organization holds annual events and scholarships to help out other local organizations and young adults in the Bethany Beach area. CFAC also supports other local organizations like Justin’s Beach House in their quest to better the community. Mike Cummings played a vital role in the fundraising and leadership of Justin’s Beach House. MIKEN’s involvement with Justin Jenning’s Foundation didn’t stop there. Each year Michael McKone, President of MIKEN Builders, and his wife (Sue McKone) donate their time and services to organize the JWJ Annual Memorial Day 5K in Bethany Beach, Delaware on Memorial Day weekend.
Ronald McDonald House of Delaware
The Christiana Care Ronald McDonald Family Room was built with Ronald McDonald House’s mission at heart; to offer nurturing and supportive environments that directly improve the health and well being of children and bring comfort to their families. The space allows families to relax, recharge, and take care of themselves while taking a break from their infant’s bedside. MIKEN Builders was touched and inspired by the positive impact this project was going to have on the community and was honored to be part of it. We donated Management Fees, and didn’t stop there. We searched for subcontractors and vendors that would donate time and material to make this project happen, which was challenging due to the current state of the economy. We are proud of the subcontractors who joined with us to make this project come in on time and under budget, which is invaluable to non-profit organizations like the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware. This project also received the 2010 Excellence in Construction Award from Associated Builders & Contractors Delaware Chapter (ABC). We thank the entire group of subcontractors for being our partners on this extraordinary project.
Lord Baltimore Elementary Fun Festival
As the end of the school year approaches our neighboring elementary school, Lord Baltimore (LB) located in Ocean View, Delaware, hosts its annual Fun Festival. MIKEN takes this opportunity to reach out to children in the community and teach them about the fun in construction and the importance of safety. MIKEN set up shop for our very own “Kids Construction Club.” With the help of Mike Cummings; Project Manager, Jim Coffey; and Betterliving of Delmarva Installer, Sean Cummings; children were able to build bird houses and heart vases. It’s never too early to start recruiting to the construction field! This community gathering of games, crafts, vendors, and fun for the whole family raises funds for a wide variety of materials and supplies for the school. It is an event that is surely not to be missed by families in the Bethany Beach, Ocean View, Millville and expanding areas.
